EP Review: Kodaline – The High Hopes EP

kodaline high hopes ep

If you’re already a fan or recently got into their music like we have, this EP is the perfect introduction to what’s to come from Dublin based alternative rock band Kodaline, offering us their heartfelt words and chilling sounds that show us why they were on the list for BBC Sound of 2013; this week saw the release of The High Hopes EP.

The EP offers us four songs, two of them that really showcase the band’s gripping sound. High Hopes goes straight into the vocals of Steve Garrigan which are fragile yet controlling as he guides us through to the chorus and from there his vocals soar so high that you’re immediately pulled in to his infectious sound. Then with The Answer, we have an acoustic combined with a haunting strings faintly in the background which really makes you feel the emotions that the song provokes as The Answer focuses on mistakes, regrets and a pervading sense of loneliness.

The third and fourth songs are a cover and remix respectfully; it gives the band a chance to show what they can really do with their own twist of things. A cover to LCD Soundsystem All My Friends brings a slower tone compared to the upbeat original which everyone knows of but we felt that they did a great job bringing their own take and style into it. All I Know the song from their first EP and remixed by Everything Everything we felt didn’t sound so well, though the quirky and zone out beats make it a little fun to listen to or more so passable.

As new fans the EP has certainly giving us a positive impression of the four piece male band and indeed wanting to hear more, a warm up to what’s to come from their debut album In A Perfect World coming out on April 1st 2013.

The High Hopes EP is available to download now on iTunes.

Our Verdict – 4/5
