EP Review: Wolfhound – Tales of Truth & Lies

Having played this year’s Brisfest last month, Bristol’s female trio Wolfhound have released their second EP Tales of Truth & Lies. The new record which is the follow up to their self-titled debut Empty Lighthouse, brings forth their own brand of dark melodic folk pop which immediately draws you in as you listen to the crisp and soulful vocals, harmonising guitar riffs and tradiitional drums.

Each track on the record has something to tell and allows you to enter into their musical culture.  Opening track Home starts off with a traditional acoustic folk sound; acoustic guitar with country riffs and whispering vocals, it’s natural and enticing to listen to. Second track Elements picks things up slightly with tempo drumbeats and faster guitar strums that’ll certainly get you moving. Sally’s soulful vocals really bring forward this song; engaging and intimate as words of love and faith are exchange as she switches from high to low tones.  Fall Away really shines through from a vocal point of view, calm, swift and in unison between Natalie, Sally and Anja harmonies, their echoed vocals in the last third of the song really signifies their dark melodic sound.

Listening to Tales of Truth & Lies, you can really sense the progression in their music. In comparison to self titled debut Empty Lighthouse their sound is more refined and most importantly the girls have defined their own style; dark, delicate and down to earth along with their soulful harmonies and acoustics, Wolfhound fit themselves comfortably into the acoustic/folk genre and into the works of Jelli Records. There’s potential and growth in their music and with the new guidance of Jelli Records by their side, Wolfhound will certainly blossom into something truly spectacular. Tales of Truth & Lies is a step in the right direction, a record that offer’s clarity, soul and originality that’ll leave you wanting for more.

Verdict – 3.5/5

Tales of Truth & Lies is available to buy on iTunes and streaming on Soundcloud.
